They work in a diverse range of industries from gardening and seed propagation to fruit and vegetable production, retail and research.

The Certificate III in Horticulture covers plant species, growth and protection. Learn to identify threats to plant health such as pests and diseases and to implement plant and turf nutrition programs. It includes workplace health and safety protocols, equipment use and maintenance.

To meet the requirements for the Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716) you need to satisfactorily complete 16 units.

Core Units

Provide information on plants and their culture (AHCPCM302)
Learn to communicate a knowledge of plants and their growth requirements such as sunlight and shade, water, soil drainage and soil fertility.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Control plant pests, diseases and disorders (AHCPMG302)
Develop the skills to assess infestations and diseases in plants and to implement control measures to manage the problem.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Implement soil improvements for garden and turf areas (AHCSOL303)
Gain the knowledge to prepare and improve soil for planting or replanting, collect soil samples from planting areas and test their physical and chemical characteristics and Plan a soil improvement program to optimise the tested area for projects such as garden beds or lawn.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Control weeds (AHCPMG301)
Develop the skills to assess weed infestations and implement weed control measures and learn strategies to provide effective weed control while avoiding damage to other plants and animals.

Nil

Contribute to work health and safety processes (AHCWHS301)
Develop the skills to actively participate in maintaining the health and safety of people in your workplace, learn to contribute to a positive safety culture in your workplace and to carry out employee responsibilities according to legislation, codes of practice and enterprise work health and safety policies.

Nil

Elective Units

Identify and report unusual disease or plant pest signs (AHCBIO302)
Develop the knowledge to recognise unusual infestations and diseases in plants and to report the problem to the appropriate authorities.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Prepare and apply chemicals (AHCCHM303)
Gain the knowledge to determine if chemicals need to be used for pest control across a range of industries and the skills to get the chemicals ready to use and apply them safely.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Transport and store chemicals (AHCCHM304)
Develop the skills and knowledge to safely handle, transport and store chemicals, how to interpret chemical labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and health and safety procedures to identify chemical storage and transport requirements.

Nil

Operate machinery and equipment (AHCMOM304)
Develop the skills required to prepare and use agricultural and horticultural machinery and equipment in a safe and controlled manner.

Nil

Implement a plant nutrition program (AHCPCM301)
Develop the skills and knowledge to examine and track the nutritional requirements of plants and to implement plans to improve plant health and growth.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Identify plant specimens (AHCPCM303)
“Gain the knowledge to identify plant species from specimens. Learn to describe the features and attributes of a plant for the purpose of identification.

Recognise any health characteristics that support identification, examine plant morphology and record the plant specimen’s identity according to your workplace or client needs.”

Implement a plant establishment program (AHCPGD301)
“Gain the skills required to establish planting areas and gardens as part of new planting projects, renovations, and replanting works in a range of environments.

Learn the importance of preparing your planting site, selecting the right species in terms of growth rates, space and planting needs and providing post planting care.”

Prerequisites:
Nil

Perform specialist amenity pruning (AHCPGD303)
Develop the skills to prune plants and trees using specialist techniques.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Implement a landscape maintenance program (AHCPGD304)
Gain the skills and knowledge to apply maintenance plans to both newly constructed or established landscapes.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Operate a pole saw (FWPCOT3238)
Develop the skills required to trim branches and vines that are too high to reach from the ground to encourage tree growth and the knowledge required for the maintenance of a pole saw.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Coordinate work site activities (AHCWRK305)
Develop the skills to organise and manage work sites for small projects and learn the processes used to prepare and plan a work site including identifying and allocating resources, scheduling progress and delegating tasks.

What do I get for completing the Certificate III in Horticulture?

You will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course as well as an official qualification.

What can I expect in the Certificate III in Horticulture?

Interlink’s Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716) course is held in our fully equipped training rooms and in outdoor environments to give you a balance between the theory and the practice needed to work as a horticulturist. Some training and assessments can be completed on the job.

The course contains a combination of written and practical assessments conducted within realistic, workplace settings and held over the duration of the course.

All Interlink trainers have industry experience as well relevant qualifications.

Safety is a priority at Interlink so we ask all students to provide the following personal protective equipment:

  • Long sleeve Hi-Vis shirt and trousers
  • Steel capped boots

Course Duration

The Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716) is usually completed within 12 months.

Entry Requirements and Study Pathways

There are no prerequisites for the Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30716). It is available through direct entry.

Once you’ve completed your Certificate III you can advance on to the Diploma of Arboriculture (AHC50520).

To successfully complete this course participants will need intermediate literacy and numeracy skills.
