Control vegetation using pruning techniques (UETDRVC007)

Training | Course | Certificate

Study Control vegetation using pruning techniques at Interlink

Control vegetation using pruning techniques (UETDRVC007) gives you the skills and knowledge required to clear growth from trees and other plant species surrounding powerlines, cables, conductors and other electrical equipment.

Pruning can take place on the ground or at a height. This course teaches you to identify the pruning needs of plants up to the vegetation exclusion zone near live electrical apparatus within the electrical supply industry.

What do I get for completing Control vegetation using pruning techniques?

Completing Interlink’s course meets the national requirements for the accredited Unit of Competency (UETDRVC007).

Control vegetation using pruning techniques (UETDRVC007) is a competency within the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control.

You will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course.

What will I learn during Control vegetation using pruning techniques?

Interlink’s course teaches you to perform pruning techniques near electrical apparatus such as conductors, powerlines and cables.

Learn how to determine pruning requirements and to differentiate between formative, corrective and preventative pruning. Look at the effects of poor pruning practices and how they can influence the future shape and structure of a tree.

Develop the skills to select the right pruning tools for the job taking into account the location, access points and the size of the vegetation. Carry out pre-operational checks on any tools and equipment, including PPE, and go over your pruning plan and work schedule to ensure established procedures are followed.

What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?

Interlink’s Control vegetation using pruning techniques (UETDRVC007) course contains a combination of written and practical assessments.

Written assessments test your knowledge of key learning outcomes including:

  • Correct pruning practices, cut size and how much to prune
  • Types of pruning (formative, corrective, preventative and natural target pruning)
  • Understanding of the reasons for pruning around powerlines and the principles of pruning near electrical apparatus
  • Different cutting techniques using handsaws, chainsaws and other implements
  • Identifying tree and plant species, particularly endangered species
  • Assessing conditions at the worksite, inspecting the location and determining the best method for the job.

Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate performance criteria such as:

  • Pruning principles and techniques, including shaping, controlling growth, preventing disease and providing clearance for electrical assets
  • Selecting the correct pruning equipment for the job such as handsaws, hand and battery-powered secateurs, hedge trimmers and pole-saws
  • Determining and using PPE for pruning activities such as gloves, face guards and protective eyewear
  • Correct cutting angles for branch bark ridges, stem bark ridges, co-dominant stems and visible branch collars
  • Applying relevant workplace health and safety requirements
  • Incorporating sustainable energy principles and practices
  • Identifying and controlling hazards
  • Cleaning up your site and disposing of plant waste
  • Dealing with unplanned events and responding to incidents.

Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
