Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher (FWPHAR2206)

Training | Course | Certificate

Study Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher at Interlink

Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher (FWPHAR2206) gives you the skill to chip or mulch timber waste using a mobile chipping or mulching unit. Mobile mulchers and chippers allow you to clean up branches and other tree refuse left after felling operations effectively, with limited disturbance to soil and remaining plant life.

Learn to set up and carry out pre-operational safety checks and to identify any maintenance needs. Determine the capacity of your equipment and what tree and branch types are suitable for chipping or mulching.

What do I get for completing Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher?

Completing Interlink’s course meets the national requirements for the accredited Unit of Competency (FWPHAR2206).

Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more) (TLILIC2005) is a competency within the Certificate III in Arboriculture as well as the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control. It’s a step closer to your nationally recognised qualification.

You will receive a Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course.

What will I learn during the Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher unit?

Interlink’s course teaches you to chip or mulch timber waste. Learn to determine if timber is suitable to mulch and to dispose of or recycle rejected timber, in an environmentally friendly way.

Discover how to position, secure and set up a chipping and mulching unit and to feed timber waste into the chipper/mulcher at a rate that matches the unit’s capacity.

Learn to prepare for your mobile chipping or mulching job by reviewing work orders and identifying the type and quantity of timber refuse to process.

During the course of your studies you will complete maintenance on chippers and mulchers and follow safety protocols to lock out your equipment. Learn the importance of checking cutters for wear and damage and replace them according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?

Interlink’s Operate a mobile chipper/mulcher (FWPHAR2206) course contains a combination of written and practical assessments.

Written assessments test your knowledge of learning elements including:

  • Environmental protection practices such as reducing water and energy use
  • Disposing of, recycling and reusing timber
  • Types of timber waste suitable for chipping and mulching
  • The purpose, features and use of different mobile chipping and mulching units
  • Rates for feeding timber waste through the muncher or chipper
  • Methods for checking the condition of the cutting blade
  • Safety protocols focussing on equipment lock out and personal protective wear.

Practical assessments require you to demonstrate key performance criteria such as:

  • Understanding and following work orders for chipping and mulching jobs
  • Completing chipping and mulching operations for different quantities of timber and different chip sizes
  • Performing maintenance on a mobile chipper/mulcher including fuelling, safety checks, cleaning and replacing the cutter.

Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
