Study Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus at Interlink
Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus (UETTDRVC21) gives you the skills required to perform necessary pruning operations near electrical conductors, cables, powerlines and other equipment using safe climbing methods.
Learn safe tree climbing and pruning practices and gain a sound knowledge of aerial voltage systems and how to lower vegetation from a height within an ESI environment.
Apply relevant workplace health and safety requirements including the selection of appropriate PPE such as harnesses. Learn to follow industry guidelines for safe work zones and to implement control measures to reduce hazards and risks in the workplace.
What do I get for completing Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus?
Completing Interlink’s course meets the national requirements for the accredited Unit of Competency (UETTDRVC21).
Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus (UETTDRVC21) is a competency within the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control.
You will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course.
Note: This course superseded UETTDRVC21A – Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus in September 2019.
What will I learn during Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus?
Interlink’s course teaches you to use appropriate and safe climbing methods to access vegetation around electrical apparatus in order to prune it. Keeping tree and plant life clear from electrical cables, conductors, powerlines and other equipment is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable power supply to the community.
Learn to prepare and assess your worksite and to follow a cutting plan specific to the plant species you are working with. Discover which trees are safe and permitted to climb and confirm the appropriate machinery and cutting techniques for the task.
Develop the skills and confidence to identify and monitor any hazards to ensure your own safety and that of your workplace.
Learn the importance of cleaning up and ensuring your worksite is safe and rehabilitated on completion of your job. Carry out post operational checks on any tools and equipment including PPE, and go over your cutting plan and work schedule to ensure established procedures have been followed.
What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?
Use climbing techniques to cut vegetation above ground near live electrical apparatus (UETTDRVC21) contains a combination of written and practical assessments.
Written assessments test your knowledge of key learning outcomes including:
- Hazard assessment and risk management principles relevant to vegetation control including precautions specific to climbing
- Selection, maintenance and use of PPE, including harnesses
- Identification of electrical hazards
- Tree preservation standards, codes and legislation relating to what vegetation you are permitted to climb
- Descent control techniques such as safety ropes and lines, load calculations and other precautions for lowering vegetation
- Safe tree climbing and pruning practices including operating safety lines and ropes, roping techniques, load bearing equipment and lifts
- Identifying site, tree and ground conditions
- Vegetation control tools and equipment
- Different branch cutting methods such as scarf under-cut, top cut and side scarf opposite back-cut techniques
- Emergency responses and rescue, including first aid.
Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate performance criteria such as:
- Applying relevant workplace health and safety requirements
- Incorporating sustainable energy principles and practices
- Demonstrating operational knowledge of the principles of electricity, the three-phase power system and safe working zones
- Recognising aerial voltage systems
- Identifying low voltage (LV) and high voltage (HV) aerial circuits
- Selecting and wearing relevant personnel protective equipment (PPE)
- Using safe rigging and climbing procedures
- Operating restraints, slings and loads safely
- Using tools and equipment such as hand saws, chainsaws and power pruners above ground
- Identifying and controlling hazards
- Analysing and making decisions taking into account the site and weather conditions
- Identifying vegetation and tree species
- Confirming appropriate machinery and cutting techniques for different species
- Using suitable cutting and feeder route plans
- Conducting calculations related to loading and slinging
- Dealing with unplanned events and responding to incidents.
Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
