What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?

Written assessments test your knowledge of key learning outcomes including:

  • The types and applications of specialised plant such as sky trim, jarraff, hedging tractor, and timberpro (harvester)
  • The purpose and use of cutting plans for specific tree or plant species
  • Different branch cutting methods such as scarf under-cut, top cut and side scarf opposite back-cut techniques
  • The definition of drop zone and full zone
  • Selection, maintenance and use of PPE
  • Pre-operational checks and basic maintenance of specialised plant including electrical test requirements, cleaning and storage.

Practical assessments assess your ability to demonstrate performance criteria such as:

  • Implementing relevant workplace health and safety requirements including risk control measures
  • Applying sustainable energy principles and practices
  • Operating specialised plant and machinery, including mechanical tree trimmers, boom-operated mowers and hedgers
  • Carrying out pre and post operational checks, inspections and maintenance on specialised plant and equipment
  • Recognising and reporting any defects or damage
  • Interpreting and applying operating procedures, industry standards and enterprise policies
  • Selecting and wearing relevant personnel protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats and face masks
  • Considering and monitoring the environmental implications associated with the operation of machinery and equipment
  • Identifying and controlling hazards such as fumes, dust and difficult terrain
  • Analysing and making decisions taking into account the site and weather conditions
  • Dealing with unplanned events and responding to incidents.

Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
