Study Use standard climbing techniques to access trees at Interlink

Use standard climbing techniques to access trees (AHCARB312) gives you the skills to climb trees with ropes and harnesses.

Learn the safety requirements, pre-operational checks, and equipment needed to ascend and descend a tree securely.

In line with industry standards, this unit requires you to complete a log book recording at least 200 hours of standard climbing to achieve competency.

What do I get for completing Use standard climbing techniques to access trees?

Completing Interlink’s course meets the national requirements for the accredited Unit of Competency (AHCARB312).

Use standard climbing techniques to access trees (AHCARB312) is a competency within the Certificate III in Arboriculture and the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control.

You will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment when you successfully complete this course.

What will I learn during Use standard climbing techniques to access trees?

Interlink’s course teaches you to access, ascend and descend trees using harnesses, lanyards, double ropes, foot ascenders and other climbing equipment.

Learn to prepare for your climb by completing a site-specific risk assessment. Carry out safety checks on ropes, harnesses, tools and equipment and record the health and safety, environmental and other site control measures planned for the climb.

Learn how to inspect a tree to determine the lowest risk climbing route. Estimate the height of the tree and the load in relation to the safe working limits of your ropes and other equipment.

During the course of your studies you will consult with your work team to determine the best method for accessing a tree – climbing or using an elevated work platform. Communicate with your team during the operation using voice, hand and whistle signals. Ensure your team are present, capable and equipped to assist or perform an aerial rescue.

What sort of assessments can I expect to complete?

Interlink’s Use standard climbing techniques to access trees (AHCARB312) course contains a combination of written and practical assessments.

Written assessments test your knowledge of learning elements including:

  • Appropriate methods for tree access including the use of climbing techniques and elevated work platforms
  • Site-specific risk assessment and determination of location of above-and-below-ground services
  • First aid and rescue personnel, equipment and procedures
  • Standard climbing techniques
  • Controlled descent operations
  • Types of climbing ropes, their uses, characteristics and safe working limits
  • Climbing equipment including harnesses, lanyards and triple locking carabiners
  • Tying, setting, checking and finishing arborist knots
  • Industry standard voice, hand and whistle signals
  • Tree access techniques (double rope with Prusik technique, trunk walking and foot ascenders)
  • Low risk access routes and anchor points
  • Controlled removal, cleaning and storage of equipment.

Practical assessments require you to demonstrate key performance criteria such as:

  • Climbing trees safely using standard climbing techniques
  • Inspecting trees to determine low risk access routes, tree height and load in relation to safe working limits of ropes and equipment
  • Assessing tress using a low-risk access route, harness and lanyard
  • Ascending trees using standard climbing techniques such as the Prusik technique and a double rope and the trunk walking technique with foot ascenders
  • Descending trees in a controlled manner
  • Undertaking a site-specific risk assessment, identifying work health and safety hazards
  • Carrying out pre-operational and safety checks on ropes, harnesses and other equipment
  • Ensuring work team members are present, capable, willing and equipped to assist or perform aerial rescue operations
  • Selecting and using static and dynamic rope and triple locking carabiners
  • Cleaning and storing climbing and personal protective equipment
  • Using industry standard terminology in work environments.

Assessment are conducted within realistic, workplace settings and are held over the duration of the unit.
