Vegetation management it an important part of maintaining a reliable and safe power supply for the community. It’s also plays a vital role in preventing utility ignited fires.

The Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control covers preparing for and carrying out vegetation management at and above ground level near live electrical apparatus. It includes workplace health and safety protocols, equipment use and maintenance across specialist elective streams.

What will I study in the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control?

To meet the requirements for the Certificate II in ESI – Powerline Vegetation Control (UET20321) you must demonstrate your competency in all core units, as well as completing three elective units.

Core units

Operate and maintain chainsaws (AHCMOM213)

Learn to operate chainsaws using safe cutting techniques and to maintain them in good-working condition. Learn how to assess the timber you’re preparing to cut for defects and hazards and to select the right cutting method for the job. Place supports to give you a stable base for cutting and cross cut timber using low-risk work methods.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Comply with environmental requirements (UETDREL002)
Apply environmental protection and incident response procedures in compliance with government regulations. Learn to review and follow workplace health and safety principles and sustainable energy practices to reduce incidents and waste.

Look at regulations and expectations relating to confined spaces, lifting, climbing, hazard warning and safety signs as well as safe practices for the use of tools within an ESI environment. Learn the safety characteristics and use of electrical testing devices, powerline awareness and the risks associated with high and low voltage scenarios.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker (UETDREL006)
Designed to give workers with non-electrical backgrounds the knowledge to stay safe and understand compliance requirements when working near live power sources. Gain an understanding of basic electrical principals, study transmission and distribution, and the fundamentals for working safely near live electrical apparatus.

Prerequisites:
Nil

Apply work health and safety requirements for powerline vegetation control (UETDRVC001)
Learn about the health and safety legislative requirements of an ESI environment. Look at the safe-work methods and duty of care requirements that help you work safely and prevent injuries and incidents.

Learn to identify potential hazards and to take risk control measures according to established procedures, workplace procedures for dealing with accidents, and about common personal protective equipment (PPE).

Prerequisites:
Nil

Monitor vegetation control work in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus (UETDRVC009)
Develop the knowledge to work as a safety observer within the electrical supply industry (ESI). Monitor vegetation control work to ensure safety compliance. Spot and stop unsafe working practices and prevent any unauthorised people or equipment entering the safe approach distance (SAD).

Examine the relevant government guidelines and codes of practice for safe work and access near live electrical and mechanical apparatus. Learn how to prepare risk assessments and to implement control measures including job safety assessments.

Prerequisites:

  • Comply with environmental requirements (UETDREL002)
  • Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker (UETDREL006)
  • Apply work health and safety requirements for powerline vegetation control (UETDRVC001)

Elective units

Control vegetation in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus from an elevated work platform (UETDRVC004)
Learn to prune, cut and trim trees and other vegetation near electrical apparatus from an elevated work platform and about the different types of elevated work platform (EWP) and the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Prerequisites:

  • Comply with environmental requirements (UETDREL002)
  • Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker (UETDREL006)
  • Apply work health and safety requirements for powerline vegetation control (UETDRVC001)
  • Control vegetation using pruning techniques (UETDRVC007)
  • Monitor vegetation control work in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus (UETDRVC009)
Control vegetation in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus from ground level (UETDRVC005)
Develop the skills required to carry out the pruning or removal of shrubs, trees and other plant life up to the vegetation exclusion zone within the electrical supply industry including trimming and removing trees, mulching branches, managing regrowth and the mechanical slashing of undergrowth near live electrical apparatus such as conductors and cables.

Prerequisites:

    • Comply with environmental requirements (UETDREL002)
    • Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker (UETDREL006)
    • Apply work health and safety requirements for powerline vegetation control (UETDRVC001)
    • Monitor vegetation control work in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus (UETDRVC009)
Control vegetation using pruning techniques (UETDRVC007)
Learn how to determine pruning requirements and to differentiate between formative, corrective and preventative pruning. Look at the effects of poor pruning practices and how they can influence the future shape and structure of a tree.

Prerequisites:

      • Comply with environmental requirements (UETDREL002)
      • Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus as a non-electrical worker (UETDREL006)
